Fitness First or Moro Lorenzo?

Last time I worked out regularly was way back college (not that far back, smart alecks) when I was still varsity baseball. I had a regular scheme and focused mostly on midsection to the lower body.  Anyway, it was high time to maintain my "fitness" again. I've been pondering on this for some time now, hence the great debate...

I had a trial workout last Monday at Fitness First at Greenhills. My appointment was supposedly at six in the evening, but I got there at 7.30p due to some "work" I had to finish first so I can be efficient.  The gym was going to close at 10 and I finished showering at 9.40p. I think I maximized the free time I had.

One thing that was awkward was the locker room. At least when we used to shower during my varsity days, I knew the people I was with. There was some comfort in that. However, this time felt weird seeing men, mostly in need of "fitness first", were parading in nothing but towels and/or underwear. At least they gave me a sense of confidence that maybe I wasn't so bad since I didn't have their bellies. Then again, maybe I should work hard not to get it.

An aside, after the workout was a pretty long stay at Krispy Kreme maximing their free WiFi and gaining back whatever calories I lost. (Just got an Orange Freez drink thing and a vanilla donut, though.)  I eventually left when Ali, my notebook, ran out of battery. After I left, I walked to some institutions (to be revealed much much later) eventually getting to the last one at almost midnight.

On to the next option: Moro. One plus for Moro is that it is VERY near to the people I've grown to love. It's also near where I live. In addition, it probably won't cost an arm and a leg (although losing an arm and a leg means considerable weight loss — weh, Edge!) to join here. Prolly, just an arm. That definitely would be considerably less.

Final point: I was listening to archives of Chico and Delamar's Top 10. Yeah, they cheer me up a little during these dark dark times. On the day of the trial workout, I was listening to the Top 10 Poor People Quotes. The entries once again made me reflect on my own personal mission statement. One entry was striking on that very day that I was going to go to Fitness First.  It was from a boy at a Gawad Kalinga village. (I'll post the transcript of the entry later in a reply. If you don't know me well enough, I used to be a mission volunteer for Gawad Kalinga back in college and then soon after lots of work in connection with it as a full-time pastoral worker.) The boy said, "Kuya, bakit ang mga mayayaman kain nang kain tapos gagastos para magpapayat?" That was disturbing.

Your thoughts?

  2. I've been asking around how I could rebuild the tone on my chest and arms that I lost since stopping regular weight training, but hearing that on the "radio" was very relevant on the day I was going to go out to consider paying for that to be done. Consider, too, that this boy prolly wasn't the one who came up with the thought originally. He had to have heard it somewhere else, too.

  3. Isn't Greenhills a very far place to go just to go to the gym? And if your really going to push through with going to the gym regularly, I'd go with Fitness First simply because Moro's always full. It could be that I was always there during peak hours.

  4. Chico Garcia: Let's start off at number five from No Name. This is from a boy my son was teaching in Gawad Kalinga and he told No Name's son, "Kuya, bakit ang mga mayayaman kain nang kain tapos gagastos para magpapayat?"Delamar (sighing): Yeah.Chico: And he was just saying, "Why don't they just, you know, eat just right and whatever's surplus, give it to us because we're not eating anything."Delamar (interjects): You don't need too much. (groans)Chico (sighing): Yeah.Delamar: It's hard to answer these questions in a way that doesn't mess them up (Chico agrees with "uh-huh"), 'cause once they see that, they're gonna start feeling resentful against people who have nothing to do with probably how they're - their state in life.Chico: Yeah.Delamar (groans): This is difficult.Chico: Because, you know, for kids who do not have a lot, it doesn't make sense. You're spending a lot of money to buy expensive food and then you spend even more trying to lose the weight. So, going to a fancy gym or buying pills or going to op- — surgeries.Delamar: Yeah, when what you can do is just limit your intake and not... but of course, that's their lifestyle.Chico: And you can't do that if you're rich because, you know, you can afford to taste as many different types of food as you can.Delamar: Yeah, but how do you explain that to a child so that the child doesn't resent other people for his plight in life?

  5. If only it were THAT simple, but resistance training to build up those areas and the midsection are trickier than you'd think.

  6. Fitness First has a Passport package where you could work out at any Fitness First (it's only a bit more for each month). Besides, Greenhills is ... uhmm... wait for news. :D

  7. if you get to know the people at moro well enough, you can supposedly get away with not paying your dues? i heard from raymond that jopy used to do that :)) dunno if they're stricter now though.

  8. i think fitness is better ONLY IF you're serious about your work out. if not, dont waste your cash. go to moro. =))

  9. Yun nga... I only want to rebuild lost tone in chest and arms and maintain the rest. It's not THAT serious. However, I'm also interested in the classes they offer. Dancing's good cardio and I miss the days when we danced in a serious (wink wink at Dindi) studio and the time when I choreo'd cheer dance routines. (Isa sa mga pangarap ko ang maihagis sa basket toss then maka-full straddle to full pike in mid-air.)

  11. You guys know that I am not THAT type of person. If they offer to make it free, possibly maybe, but I am not a con.

  12. Given enough space in air, I think kaya ko e, although the pike hurts in the abdominal area. Problem lang was that I'm heavy and no one was willing to risk catching me from it (and I wouldn't get much elevation).

...and this, folks, is a classic case of multiple personality disorder. The syndrome is sometimes referred to as Victor/Victoria as this person seems to have a different gender altogether that communicates with the other...
